***spoiler alert: do NOT read stuff on the pictures if you do not want to know, just look at the art!! 😉***

A co-op "Dream crawler" by Awaken Realms. Now that sounds unique, right? And it really seems to be. After getting into the "secret" prototype demo's at UKGE, I'll try to share my experience here. Please keep in mind that this is only the early prototype and we only got to play a beginning fraction of the game. In no way I do I have a complete game overview or an idea of all the mechanics that this game will have! We'll all have to see where these strange dreams will take us, including me.

In short:
*Did I like this demo experience? YES.
*Art and mini's? Just wow.
*Component quality? Saw this early prototype only, so cannot say yet.
*Will I be interested in backing it? Absolutely.
*Easy play mechanics? Refreshingly so!
*Clear goal for your scenario? So far: yes.
*Does that mean that you'll see a clear path to reach your goal? Nope, not at all. You are most definitely NOT meant to. It's a dream...do you ever fully understand yours?
*Is it like Tainted Grail? Only in small parts. Tainted Grail is 99% storytelling, lots of exploring in a genre in a set world. It's much clearer what you can/need to do. In Etherfields you are exploring YOURSELF. You're not only looking at the story and the text for your answer, and your path is unclear.

First, the art: to me, it is incredible and just as weird as I expected. Little strange texts and details everywhere.

The mini's? Some of them are HUGE! 😮
At first I thought those were the player characters, but nope, these are the creatures you'll encounter in dreams. The character figurines are of a much more "playable size".

Now, the game play:
You start by picking 2 different masks from the many available( see pictures), like hate, pain, compassion, fear, haste, luck...
On the back of each mask is a special power connected to that mask. You then choose one for the scenario.

You'll also pick a character that comes with a certain asymetrical deck: a fighting style character, a "lucker" or a specialist. (A 4th style was hinted at). On these decks you'll find some very clear symbols.
Those are kind of prototype placeholders, but for now but it would be movement / transformation (yellow), Agression (red), communication (green). You can see those in the pictures. Each character will have more/less of each symbol in their starting deck.

Last, you'll draw 5 items from the face down, shuffled item deck and will decided which 3 to have available for the game. With each game you play, you'll find more items that will get added to this deck. Adding new mechanics to specialize your character.

Each play, you'll try to win a certain scenario. Your deck and experience will grow. And if you fail a scenario and will have to face it again, you'll make different choices and may find things already altered by what you did previously.

You'll start a scenario with a card that gives you the situation you're in and how many turns you'll get to complete the scenario. Your characters are placed on a card on the board. From there, it is up to the players. There is lots to go investigate, but it all costs cards and effort. There's no seeing/doing it all, as you'll run out of time/turns. There are different paths to try and win/figure out things in each scenario. And the further the game goes, there larger the dreamlocations and more choices and mechanics you'll face.

You'll draw up to 5 cards of your deck to start the turn (unless you have a special skill that allows you to draw more). The green/yellow/red symbols on the cards are the currency you'll use to take actions. If you're on a location together, you may share the costs. Very simple mechanics! (See picture of help card players turn)
You can roll a special die to add to your amount of symbols, but a bad roll might have nasty consequences.
Some cards (those without a white upper left corner), can be placed under your character board, max 5, to give you new skills and powers.
On your turns, you might find ways to draw more cards, but be careful: everytime your deck runs out, you'll get one wound. And dying is another way of loosing the scenario...
By discarding 5 cards of the same color, action cards or as rewards for certain things in the scenarios, you will be able to gain green/yellow/red crystals. These work as an extra symbol of that color, and reset every turn. Very useful, but there are only 3 of each color for the game, so considder careful who takes which ones!

In a turn, together, you'll try to do as many actions as you want/can. What will you choose to explore? Are you staying together or will you focus on different things? You can do anything in any order until you choose together to end the turn. Then draw up to 5 cards again and face a wound if you had to reshuffle your deck.

When a strange dream creature appears and you did not find a way to block it's attack or talk to it, you'll face the consquences too, which will be different each turn: you see a certain number on the turn order, and looking at that same number on the creature card, you'll know what will happen. I'll leave it up to you to figure that out 😉

And Ether? What's that and how does that come in to play? Ether is the "key" resource in this world of dreams: it can give you new memories (cards) to add to your deck or get rid of the bad ones ("sufferings" cards).

I found myself immersed in the story/dream immediately! Of course these first 2 scenario's were very quick, and only lifted a tip of the veil for this game, but I'm already very excited about it. It's weird, it's "figuring things out" as you play and not know what will happen next. The scenario's will take like an hour and then you can easily set the game aside and continue with the next scenario at a later time. How many? I do not know yet, they said "many", and I'm guessing it also depends on how the kickstarter goes

Si yo no pongo excusas. Lo tengo dentro del triplete mágico de principios de verano (con la expansión del TMB y los actos 2 y 3 de Middara). Pero bueno, siempre pueden dar la sorpresa para mal y que no me guste el juego.
