Solani Solo DetailsSolani is a game that doesn't feature a lot of player interaction. It's more about the choices you make, than the choices of your opponents. That said, the choices of other players do affect you. When designing a solo mode for a game the first thing I identify is all the sources of player interaction, and make sure that whatever form the solo mode takes, that it puts those same pressures on the game and the player. The interaction points in Solani are the draft of Star Clusters, Branches, Planets, and Special Features. For Star Clusters and Branches, I went with a simple sliding queue - select one of the three available branches or star clusters. Then, the "AI" makes 2 "selections" discarding the rightmost tile in each queue. Thus, each time you draft, you are also giving up the ability to use 2 specific tiles (one of each type). When the AI disposes of certain Star Clusters, they will also discard Planets, limiting the amount the player is able to use. Because the AI doesn't draft special features, I elected to simply deal the player 4 Special Features at the beginning of the game - part of the challenge will be navigating them in combination with your Dark Sky card setup and normal play. While the solo mode has behaviors that replicate another player - it cannot be called an AI or automa in any reasonable sense. It is more akin to a challenge mode, with a beat-your-own-score element. Can you break 50 VP with what was given to you? Can you do it multiple games in a row?The Girl Who Made the Stars DetailsThe solo mode for the Girl Who Made the Stars is a different story than Solani. This game is rich in player interaction, and required a true AI-style opponent with complex(ish) decision making abilities. The Night Sky track, the Wood Ash draft, Foraging Tokens, Early Bird Rewards, Card Offerings, Scouting new Paths, scoring Connection Reward tiles - each of these things creates and requires a unique gamestate. Each turn you will draw and reveal 1 new card. The AI will select Wood Ash tokens based on the actions and colors that are leftmost on the card. In the above example, the AI prefers to take a 2x token in the blue area first. If there's only 1 "2x" they will take it regardless of region. Using this dual-layered preference queue, the AI will always target a specific Wood Ash token. During the Action phase, drawing 3 tiles from the AIs bag will determine which actions the AI will take and in what order. The AI can Scout, Forage, or Stargaze. When Scouting and Foraging, they prefer to interact with Foraging tokens/spaces that are leftmost on the card. They will lay patterns of light according to the pattern on the card, and take tokens (leaving meeples if first) from connected spaces. At the end of each turn, under certain conditions, the AI will make offerings. They will also score constellation rewards based on the number of meeples they put on the Night Sky track. All of these behaviors are driven by a simple card + draw 3 tile system.
