------Why are we charging VAT when we said it would be EU-friendly?This is a perfectly justified question many of you have asked. Here's the situation:1) Previously, we could ship from Spiral Galaxy within the UK and no VAT would be charged since it was a low-value consignment to the UK and a UK shipment to other EU countries would not incur VAT.2) Now, as of 1st January 2021, the UK tax laws have changed according to this HRM source ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021/changes-to-vat-treatment-of-overseas-goods-sold-to-customers-from-1-january-2021) . All businesses using a UK-based fulfillment company need to be UK-VAT registered and need to pay UK VAT. Since our games will only reach the UK warehouse next year, we are not exempt from this.3) So, now that we've paid UK VAT, why are we charging taxes for other European countries? After Brexit, the UK is not a part of the EU anymore. There is a chance we may incur another VAT charge when exporting out from the UK to the various EU countries. In this case, we might even be double-charged even though we're only collecting it from you once.4) Since we are unsure of how Brexit will affect UK exports to other EU countries, there is a chance that the extra VAT may or may not be levied. If only the UK tax applies, then we will refund all EU backers who have paid more than the 20% UK VAT.5) Interestingly, when applying to be UK VAT registered, we learnt that there was a Flat Rate Scheme. Although we are uncertain about this, there is a chance we could be taxed at a lower flat rate of ~8% for e-commerce businesses. If that is properly confirmed, we will process refunds for all backers where we have charged the excess VAT.6) Point 4 will be confirmed once our shipping partners respond to our email queries. For point 5, we will be checking with other board game publishers. If anyone is an expert on this and would like to help, please email us so that we can ask you questions
